Welcome to Taideniitty artist residencies in Old Varkaus
Established in 2022, Taiteilijatalo Taideniitty (Artists' House Taideniitty) is located in an idyllic wooden house district in Old Varkaus and serves as an experiential meeting place for artists and visitors. The former workers' house, which is over 100 years old, has been transformed into a small artists' house and cultural center. We organize art exhibitions, courses, and cultural events.

Take a break from everyday life - Focus on what matters!
Bright and cozy residences with one, two, or three rooms, as well as the inspiring and natural surroundings of Old Varkaus, provide space for creativity. Our focus is on graphic art and other visual arts, but artists from all fields are welcome, along with their families and/or pets.
What the residents say

Gary DeMichele, Chigago USA
The necessary pieces required to host a proper residency were all there, support, environment, attentiveness and positivity. An added bonus for me was also, the positivity of the other residents, whose own endeavors I found to be interesting, motivating and all at an accomplished level.
I would definitely recommend this residency and have every intention of returning to it.

Suva, Helsinki / Intia
I really enjoyed working in the residency here where the space for thinking and action merge with ease. A great place to explore one's own creativity into forms. The people here are kind and wonderful. The place and space has lots of potentiality to create interesting art projects and pieces.

Timo Tolonen, Runni, Iisalmi
I am extremely pleased with my residency period at Taideniitty. Perfect concentration and warm-hearted people in a good relationship. The place itself is also fascinating.

AVA GALLERY & ART LENDING
An art gallery offering a wide range of art in the heart of Varkaus.
Terrace café Torni, operating in summer at the top of Varkaus Water Tower. Customers can enjoy the magnificent views while sitting on cushioned terrace chairs and sofas and enjoying the specials.
The Tattoo Museum exhibits materials and tools related to tattoo culture from around the world.
Designed by architect Martti Paalanen, the main church in Varkaus was completed on the eve of the Winter War in 1939. The altarpiece "Let Thy Kingdom Come", painted by Professor Lennart Segerstråhle in 1953-1954, is a remarkable work of art, covering an area of 40 square metres, making it one of the largest altarpieces in the Nordic countries.

Kämär Island and Ämmäkoski: The history of Kämär dates back to the distant past, as Varkaus' difficult rapids naturally became stopping and supply points. The rapids were fishable, and in the 1500s the area became home to the Crown Fishery under Olavinlinna Castle. Salmon were stocked in the rapids and special salmon-farming ponds were built. Over the years, Kämäri has developed into a popular sports and recreation area. In addition to a nature trail, the area has a swimming beach, a sandpit, an artificial ice rink and two ice rinks. Ice hockey, hockey and baseball are played on the rink.
