Things to See and Do in Varkaus

Varkaus Museum Centre Konsti is located in the former factory school. Designed by architect Karl Lindahl, it is a 100-year-old landmark building.

When you want to experience something unique, unforgettable, and that appeals to all your senses, head to the Museum of Mechanical Music in Varkaus.

The Väinölä Art Center is a log-frame two-family residence built by A. Ahlström Oy in 1913. The exhibition “Joy to Eastern Finland: The Naïvists” has been on display at Väinölä since 2012.

The Varkaus Main Church, designed by architect Martti Paalanen, was completed on the eve of the Winter War in 1939. The altar fresco “Thy Kingdom Come,” painted by Professor Lennart Segerstråhle in 1953–1954, is a significant work of art, as it covers an area of 40 square meters, making it one of the largest altar frescoes in the Nordic countries.

Kämärin Island and Ämmäkoski: Kämärin’s history stretches far back into the past, as Varkaus’s treacherous rapids naturally became stopping and supply points. The rapids were rich in fish, and in the 16th century, the Kruununkalastamo fishing estate, operating under the authority of Olavinlinna Castle, was established in the area. Salmon were stocked in the rapids, and special salmon-rearing pools were constructed. Over the years, Kämäri has developed into a popular area for sports and local recreation. In addition to a nature trail, the area features a swimming beach, a sand-surf field, an artificial ice track, and two ice rinks. Kämäri hosts bandy, ice hockey, and Finnish baseball games.

The Taipale Canal Museum is located in Varkaus, in the Taipale Canal area. The Taipale Canal, which is part of the Vuoksi waterway system and the Northern Savo waterway route, is an active deep-water canal. The area also features a museum canal that was completed in 1840.
