Taideniitty is a guesthouse, gallery, and international artist residency located in a 110-year-old former workers’ house in the historic wooden-house district of Old Varkaus.

Varkaus’s industrial heritage has been awarded the European Heritage Label (EHL). Taideniitty is located at the heart of this cultural heritage, in the historic wooden house district of Old Varkaus, in a 110-year-old former workers’ house. Taideniitty is part of the area’s vibrant and evolving cultural life and is an EHL tourist destination.

International tourists, artist residencies, exhibitions, concerts, and other cultural events bring life to the house and garden year-round.

A Year at Taideniitty:

In the summer, the house and garden come alive with exhibitions, concerts, art, and events. You can also enjoy the atmosphere of the grounds at the Fifty-Fifty Waffle Café, whose delicious waffles have already gained a loyal following.

In the fall, winter, and spring, we host cultural evenings, during which our small living room transforms into an intimate cultural stage. The program includes theater, jazz, stand-up comedy, artist meet-and-greets, and other surprises. The small space brings performers and the audience closer together, creating evenings with a unique atmosphere, topped off by Niittybaari’s offerings. The fall/winter season also features a lively program of artist residencies and art workshops.

You can also stay at Taideniitty year-round. The cozy and unique accommodations offer the chance to spend the night in the atmosphere of a historic artist’s house. Accommodations also include access to a sauna.

Organisation

Taideniitty – a place for art, people, and encounters

Taideniitty is built on the collaboration of two complementary actors, creating a unique whole: a space and its content, everyday life and creativity.

Taideniitty Collective Association (Taideniitty-kollektiivi ry) is a non-profit organization that brings the house to life. It organizes events, exhibitions, and an artist residency program that invite people to gather around art. All events are free of charge and open to everyone – both locals of Varkaus and visitors.

At Taideniitty, everyone is welcome as they are. Our work is grounded in equality and inclusion: all who visit and work here are treated as equals. We actively strive to develop our activities, services, and environment to reflect and embrace human diversity, creating space for different voices and experiences. Taideniitty has zero tolerance for racism in any form.

Taideniitty Real Estate Company (Keskinäinen kiinteistöosakeyhtiö Taideniitty) takes care of the physical home of Taideniitty, located at Kissakoskenkatu 6 in Varkaus. The building is sustained through accommodation services, the income of which covers maintenance and operational costs.

Together, these two actors make Taideniitty possible: a place where space gives room for art – and people give it meaning.
