Taideniitty – a place for art, people, and encounters
Taideniitty is built on the collaboration of two complementary actors, creating a unique whole: a space and its content, everyday life and creativity.
Taideniitty Collective Association (Taideniitty-kollektiivi ry) is a non-profit organization that brings the house to life. It organizes events, exhibitions, and an artist residency program that invite people to gather around art. All events are free of charge and open to everyone – both locals of Varkaus and visitors.
At Taideniitty, everyone is welcome as they are. Our work is grounded in equality and inclusion: all who visit and work here are treated as equals. We actively strive to develop our activities, services, and environment to reflect and embrace human diversity, creating space for different voices and experiences. Taideniitty has zero tolerance for racism in any form.
Taideniitty Real Estate Company (Keskinäinen kiinteistöosakeyhtiö Taideniitty) takes care of the physical home of Taideniitty, located at Kissakoskenkatu 6 in Varkaus. The building is sustained through accommodation services, the income of which covers maintenance and operational costs.
Together, these two actors make Taideniitty possible: a place where space gives room for art – and people give it meaning.

Experiences and encounters in the artists' house

Established in 2022, Taiteilijatalo Taideniitty (Artist House Taideniitty) is located in an idyllic wooden house district in Old Varkaus and serves as an experiential meeting place for artists and visitors. The over 100-year-old "Niittylä II," a former workers' house, has been transformed into a small artist house and cultural center. We organize art exhibitions, courses, and cultural events.
We also have charming and unique accommodation facilities: the Aurinko, Niitty, Maa, PikkuTaika, and Tuuli residences, as well as the Taika residence, which is open from autumn to spring. Guests have access to a courtyard sauna with gentle heat.
For experienced adventure travelers, the place offers authentic small-town charm.
The Fifty-Fifty waffle café operates at Taideniitty events. It is only open in the summer and offers its famous waffles. You can enjoy your freshly baked treats in the beautifully decorated café or in the cozy courtyard garden. Fifty-Fifty closes for the winter on August 8, 2025. In the summer, children can enjoy the Old Varkaus stick horse stable, obstacle course, and various yard games.
The 750 m2 building houses the Galleria Taideniitty art gallery with its changing exhibitions, three artist studios, artist homes, artist residences, and a shared studio with equipment such as a print press and painting easels.
